UBE Corporation Europe, based in polígono El Serrallo in
Castellón, and the valencian SME QMC
Tecnología Química with the Energy Cluster of Valencia Region have carried out
an innovative project by which the operating conditions of wind turbines will be
improved by increasing their efficiency and durability.
The project objective is to develop a system to
produce the actual conditions of a wind turbine blade, which
will evaluate the effects of erosion on the leading edge of the blade, which is,
by far, the area that suffers the most during its operation. The ultimate
goal is to develop a solution that maximizes the strength and it will be
compatible with the current manufacturing processes.
This innovative project, which is aligned with the
strategic lines of the cluster including the promotion of renewable energies,
the use of wind energy and energy efficiency, has been selected because of its
high innovative component by the Agrupaciones Empresariales
Innovadoras (AEI) program of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism,
and co-financed by ERDF.
This technology will increase significantly not only the
life of the wind turbines, also the period of maximum efficiency of these and
will reduce the maintenance costs.
Nowadays there is only a system to measure the effects of
erosion in wind blades in the market, sold by a Danish company, so this
development represents a major innovation at the international level and in
which have been very interested the leading manufacturers.
The multinational UBE Corporation Europe located in
Castellon, world leader company in the manufacture of polycarbonate diol (PCD),
brings its knowledge in the synthesis and manufacture of PCD, its great capacity
for characterization of the formulations and support with the selection of these
products. UBE treasures extensive experience in projects of this kind in which

For its part, the valencian SME QMC Tecnología Química,
with a high degree of specialization in polymer-based products, develops a
system based on polyurea material and an application system that will allow to
gain efficiency by reducing manufacturing times.
The program to support Innovative Business groups of the
Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, whose next edition will be published
next June, with a budget of 11 million euros, mainly aims at promoting
collaborative innovative projects for what it offers non-repayable grants to
companies members of the clusters.
