The managing director of the Cluster of Energy in the Region of Valencia, Enrique Bayonne, he participated in the June 12, at 19.Th World Conference on Anaerobic Digestion – IWA AD19, held from may 9 to June 13, 2026 at the Palacio de Congresos de Valencia.
The conference, organized under the slogan \”Fueling Sustainability\”, brought together researchers, companies, professionals, policy-makers and representatives of the industry from different countries. The programme addressed the latest scientific and technological advances related to the anaerobic digestion, the recovery of waste, the production of biogas and biomethane, and the development of productive systems, low-carbon and more efficient in the use of resources.
The bioeconomy and the innovation ecosystem valencian
Enrique Bayonne participated in the session \”The Valencian Ecosystem\”, within the paper entitled \”The bioeconomy in the Valencian Community: circular economy, bio-energy, and new products\”, along with Jesus, Aguero, director of the BIOVAL Cluster BIO Valencian Community.
The session allowed us to present to an international audience the capabilities of the Comunitat Valenciana to promote projects linked to the bioeconomy, circular economy and the generation of energy from waste, and biological resources.
During the intervention emphasized the importance of connecting sectors that have traditionally worked separately. The transition towards a circular economy requires greater cooperation between energy companies, food processing industries, waste managers, operators of the water cycle, technological centres, universities and public administrations.
In this context, clusters play a significant role as agents of connection between the business needs, scientific knowledge and the opportunities for funding and innovation.

The recovery of waste as an opportunity to energy and industrial
anaerobic digestion allows you to transform different streams of organic waste and wastewater resources of value, such as biogas, biomethane, bio fertilizers and other bioproducts. This process contributes to the decarbonisation of the energy system as to the reduction of waste and more efficient use of raw materials.
Enrique Bayonne put the focus on the need to tackle these projects from a perspective of not only environmental, but also energy, industrial, and economic. For an initiative of bioenergy to be viable, you must have a stable supply of raw materials, appropriate technology, a perceived demand for the energy or the generated products and a business model able to sustain itself long-term.
Therefore, the development of biogas and biomethane not only depends on the availability of technology. It also requires regulatory safety, agility, administrative, appropriate infrastructure, funding mechanisms, and collaboration between the different actors of the value chain.
The role of clusters in the creation of collaborative projects,
The participation of the Cluster of Energy of the Comunitat Valenciana to show the work undertaken by these entities to identify common challenges, to connect companies from different sectors and to promote collaborative r+D+I.
An important part of the opportunities related to the bioeconomy is located precisely at the intersection between industries. Waste or by-products generated by an activity that can be converted into raw materials or energy resources to another. However, this cooperation does not arise automatically: need meeting spaces, trust between the organizations and coordination technique that would allow the construction of viable projects.
Clusters facilitate this process by bringing together companies, technology centres, universities and governments, helping to set up consortia with the necessary skills to develop initiatives of greater scope.
An international meeting to bring science and industry,
One of the main objectives of IWA AD19 was to strengthen the relationship between scientific knowledge and its industrial application. The conference combined academic sessions, technical papers, project presentation, meetings with companies and professional visits, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and the creation of new collaborations.
The presence of the Cluster in this international forum allowed for the transfer of the vision of the business fabric in valencia and give visibility to the regional capacities existing in areas such as energy, water treatment, recovery of waste, biotechnology and the production of gas-renewable.
From the Cluster of Energy of the Comunitat Valenciana we will continue to work to promote the cooperation between sectors, promote innovative projects, and to facilitate the opportunities associated with the bioeconomy and gas to renewable translate into new investments, industrial activity and employment in our territory.
